The manufacturer stamp reads CAREY MCFALL CO. PHILA (Philadelphia). The Carey-McFall Company was founded in the 1860s in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by William McFall and Dr. Elias Carey (a former Civil War surgeon). While the company later became famous in the 20th century for inventing aluminum Venetian blinds and aluminum Christmas trees, it began its legacy by manufacturing lamps, lanterns, and hardware for carriages. This specific part is the cast brass mounting flange or backplate. These petite lanterns were originally produced as automobile or horse-drawn coach lanterns designed to mount directly onto the curved corner posts of a vehicle's body. Age: Based on the company's production history and the transitional style of the hardware, these lamps likely date from the late 19th century to the very early 1900s.
